Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial tooth cap permanently affixed to an existing root structure, like a natural tooth root or a dental implant. Once sealed in place, a crown feels and functions just like a natural tooth.

Depending on the material you choose for your crown, it can even look just like a natural tooth as well, leaving your crown almost impossible to differentiate from real teeth.

Why would I need a crown?

South Bay Prosthodontics fits its patients with crowns for a variety of purposes, including to:

  • Restore a tooth that’s suffered from significant damage or decay
  • Replace a tooth that’s misshapen or unsightly
  • Maintain a tooth’s structure and integrity after a root canal
  • Restore a dental implant

Crowns can restore the appearance of your smile and improve your ability to properly chew and speak.

What are crowns made of?

Crowns can be made from a wide range of materials, including:

Metals, like gold alloy, are durable and biocompatible. Because of their color, however, they’re better suited for non-visible teeth, like your back molars.

Ceramic or porcelain

Ceramic or porcelain crowns have a similar color and translucency as your tooth enamel, giving these crowns a very natural look in your smile. Because of their appearance, they tend to be a popular choice for anterior (front) teeth.

Crowns that are made from porcelain fused to metal offer the strength of metal crowns with the aesthetic benefits of porcelain material.

The team at South Bay Prosthodontics will help you select a material for your crown that’s best suited to your particular needs, preferences, and budget.

What’s the process of getting a crown?

Cementing your crown is a relatively simple procedure that only takes a few visits to the South Bay Prosthodontics office.

During your first visit, your dentist uses a local anesthetic to numb the tooth that’s going to receive the crown. Next, they prepare the tooth by shaving off some enamel, effectively making room for the crown.

Once your tooth is prepared, your dentist makes an impression of your mouth that is sent off to our in-house lab run by a master craftsman whose work is impeccable.

The master craftsman designs and fabricates your crown to fit comfortably in your mouth and blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Your dentist sends you home with a temporary crown to wear while you wait for your permanent restoration to be finished in the lab. Once your permanent crown is ready, you come back to South Bay Prosthodontics to have it placed.

Your dentist removes your temporary restoration, checks the bite and fit of the permanent crown, and finally seals it in place with dental cement. You leave the office able to chew, speak, and smile with a renewed sense of confidence.
